Since starting my blog a little over two years ago, I am regularly asked how I grew my following. The truth is, it isn’t easy! Behind every successful social media page is a lot of time, enthusiasm, effort, compromise and determination. However, that doesn’t mean to say it isn’t possible to do so yourself. So if you want to share your passion with the world, I encourage you to give it a try. And here is how I recommend you go about it:
Pick a clear focus and stick to it:
Whether it be food, travel, fashion, beauty or something else (it can be a bit of a mix, as long as it makes sense), it’s important to know what your page is going to be about. You should then create a username that reflects your chosen theme by using key words that will attract like-minded people to your profile. It’s also a good idea to have a welcoming, yet informative biography. This should include your name, something about yourself that is relevant to your page, emoji’s, your email address and a link to your website, blog, YouTube channel or alternative site that you want to drive traffic to.
Identify your target market:
Just like a profitable organisation, a successful social media page knows who their followers are and how best to reach them. For this reason, it’s important to understand your audience. To do so, I use a number of platforms including Google Analytics and have a ‘business account’ on Instagram. These sites allow me to view information about my followers such as the age group they fall into, what time they are online, whether they are male or female and much more. I’ll then use this data to learn about the persona and common characteristics of the people that engage with my page.
Interact with other accounts:
If you want people to support you, it’s important to support their accounts too. My favourite thing about Instagram, is building connections with like-minded creators from all around the world. So engage and interact with the pages you are attracted to; you’ll be surprised by how many amazing people you meet. Chances are, they will be drawn to your page too. However, it’s important to be genuine; you can tell when someone is only commenting on your photo to get a follow back.
Use hashtags and photo tagging:
If there is one thing I wish I knew when I first started my page, it’s this. Using a number of relevant hashtags really does help to expose your content to a whole new audience. For instance, on one of my recent photos, 216 of the impressions were generated from hashtags. Tagging other pages in your photos is also a great way to be seen and potentially re-posted. So find a number of accounts that regularly share content similar to yours and tag them in everything.
Quality over quantity:
While it’s important to post regularly in order to have a significant online presence, it’s far more imperative to share quality content. Unfortunately, Instagram can be quite ruthless; so if you post a boring image, accounts will unfollow you. However, this works the other way too; so post something amazing, and you’ll immediately gain the attention of new accounts. For this reason, I only take photos on the days that I feel genuinely inspired and excited to create content. I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to post daily however, I learned that doesn’t always work.
And that’s it, my top 5 tips to growing your Instagram page. If you have any questions or suggestions for my next blog post please let me know, I’d love to hear from you!
